More than 500 sea lions die from bird flu in Peru

In early 2023, over 5,000 sea lions died in Peru due to the H5N1 bird flu virus. For context, this represents around 5 % of Peru’s sea lion population during that period. The outbreak likely began with infected seabirds, many of which also died in large numbers.
