Clashes in Hong Kong as leader warns city on brink

In June 2019, protests erupted in Hong Kong over a proposed extradition bill that would have allowed the transfer of suspects to mainland China. The demonstrations soon developed into a broader pro-democracy movement. In 2020, the Chinese central government enacted a national security law, which effectively put an end to public pro-democracy protests.
